So this may start off as weird one. Our brains are tragically simple. What I mean is they really listen to everything that we say. Here is an example where that gets in the way: when I say “I can’t do that” or “I can’t figure that out” or “I suck at this,” well the challenge is that is a closed end statement. It leaves no room whatsoever for change, and our brains really hear that. When we add the words “up until now,” just those simple three words, it opens up room for change, it opens up the possibility. So when we say “up until now, I haven’t been able to do this” instead of “I can’t do this” — when we say “up until now I haven’t figure this out,” it gives our brain that opening. It leaves the possibility for change, and that shifts the way we think.
