Mindset Mondays with DTK – Ep #133 — But I'm a …The first time I remember my dad, "Dr Poppy," becoming a patient himself, I learned that the old adage "doctors make terrible patients" was uncomfortably true. Most of that, I believe, is about how uncomfortable it can be to cede control. Or maybe acknowledging weakness. Or needing help. For me, that last one is the trigger.The narrative that comes up for me sounds like: "But I'm a coach, I shouldn't still be dealing with _____!" Where the ???? does that come from? "But I'm a coach …" is so self-abusive! It completely undermines my own humanity. It flies in the face of the truth that we ALL have stuff to work on. All our lives.“I myself am made entirely of flaws, stitched together with good intentions.” — Augusten BurroughsAye, there's the rub! Yes, we all have flaws. And, how we hold, navigate, and address our flaws makes all the difference. If one believes one has no flaws, there lies the greatest flaw! For me, the goal is to hold my flaws with blameless discernment rather than self-judgement. For me, the goal is to be intentional about fixing them. For me, the goal is to do so with kindness to myself. Good intentions go a long way while being a human.Got any flaws? Whatcha doing with them?

The first time I remember my dad, “Dr Poppy,” becoming a patient himself, I learned that the old adage “doctors make terrible patients” was uncomfortably true. The narrative that comes up for me sounds like: “But I’m a coach, I shouldn’t still be dealing with _____!” Where the ???? does that come from? “But I’m a coach …” is so self-abusive! It completely undermines my own humanity. It flies in the face of the truth that we ALL have stuff to work on. All our lives.

Aye, there’s the rub! Yes, we all have flaws. And, how we hold, navigate, and address our flaws makes all the difference. If one believes one has no flaws, there lies the greatest flaw! For me, the goal is to hold my flaws with blameless discernment rather than self-judgement. For me, the goal is to be intentional about fixing them. For me, the goal is to do so with kindness to myself. Good intentions go a long way while being a human.
