God, it’s such a simple quote from Teddy Roosevelt: “Comparison is the thief of joy.”
A lot of times, what happens is we compare where we are at the beginning of our journey to somebody else’s middle, and that is really just cruel: looking at somebody and saying, “Wow, look how settled and established they are! I should be at that same place.”
Well, if you’re starting off a new business, and they’ve been doing this for several years, how is that a fair comparison? It leaves you at a place really of always-not-quite-there. It makes it very hard to celebrate your successes and move forward with whatever you’re trying to build.
So the idea is: make sure you’re comparing yourself only to what you can do when you do your best and not to where anybody else is.
