Mindset Mondays with DTK – Ep #137 — Breathe.

“That’s not right!” That”s literally what I said when I heard it (I’m glad my mic was muted). But I already knew better. My friend Matt Chavlovich — a former pro athlete and recovering overachiever — was sharing what he had learned over a lifetime of pushing beyond limits … even when it didn’t serve.

“A rest day is a training day.”
— Matt Chavlovich

It’s so simple. So elegant. And so %#&$ true! As a cyclist I already know that muscles don’t grow when they are being stressed. The stress tears the fibers and the recovery gives time and space for them to mend … and grow. That’s how it works. That’s why my workout programs are a cycle of variable time under stress spaced out by recovery rides and recovery days.

Even with 15 years in the saddle, I didn’t map that knowledge onto my business … or my life, for that matter. I’ve said for a long time that my life has “seasons” of heavy load. I’ve let those seasons run over their due course. There are times where I’ve let seasons run into years.

Note the language: “I’ve let” … that’s the key.
Consciously or not I am the one who let that happen. And that means I am the one in control of the cycle.

And I commit to building rest days into my life…
