Episode #142 — גַּם זֶה יַעֲבֹר

No worries, the rest of this email is not going to be in Hebrew.

That phrase, Gam zeh ya’avor, means “This, too, shall pass.” Given the current political condition in the US, and the resulting uncertainty and deepened polarization, it seems a fitting reminder for this week. As does this elegant line from Rilke:

“Let everything happen to you,
beauty and terror,
just keep going,
no feeling is final.”

— Ranier Maria Rilke

I take such solace in these two pieces of poetic and prophetic prose – one ancient and one modern. The former was lauded by Abraham Lincoln for “How much it expresses! How chastening in the hour of pride! How consoling in the depths of affliction!” It’s a powerful invitation to both immerse in & be present to what’s positive AND to endure what’s challenging as both situations will come to an end.

In reading the latter of the two quotes, I take away that this is merely the moment that we are in right now. So by catastrophizing forward we merely invite imaginary suffering which may or may not ever manifest AND, on the flip side, by celebrating prematurely we court disappointment should things shift …

In either case, it’s time to feel and experience all that is surfacing knowing that regardless of the outcome, these feelings will not last.

What I want for YOU is to be present to whatever is present in your world. Notice all of the feelings surfacing, be present to ALL of them, feel ALL of them.

Don’t filter. Don’t judge. Don’t vote on them. Just feel.

And KNOW that everything you are feeling is what you are feeling now. Keep going. After all, more will come.

How present are you willing to be right now?
